Matthew 21:12-16 gives the events of Jesus? cleansing of the temple. Jesus entered the temple and saw moneychangers and merchants disgracing His Father?s house. ?Jesus entered the temple area and drove out those engaged in selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.? (Matthew 21:13) Mark, Luke and John all give similar accounts of Jesus driving out the merchants and others who were disgracing the temple. ?It was a sanctuary, a place through which God was to dwell among men and His glory manifested. These people however, had made a bazaar out of it.? (Smithson) The temple is for the holy individuals who respect its importance and significance. The merchants had no respect and honor for the Lord anymore. To Jesus these people were not allowed into the temple so they could make a profit.
The cleansing of the temple also symbolizes that our bodies is also the temple of God. ?He wants to teach the gift and privilege of prayer, making our hearts houses of prayer where his Father is honored.? ([email protected]) The people that were
