Coercive power is conveyed through fear of losing one’s job, being demoted, pay cuts, suspensions or even termination of one’s contract, receiving a poor performance review, having prime projects taken away, etc. This power is gotten through fear or punishment of others. While on the hand Referent power comes from being trusted and respected meaning that the followers are apt to like, admire and want emulate the leader. This power can be gained when people trust what other people do and respect them for how they handle situations. For example, the Human Resource Associate who is known for ensuring that employees are treated fairly and coming to the rescue of those who are not.
